Postage Stamp On Sarangi Maestro Ustad Sabri Khan
Three years after his demise, Department of Posts, India will release a new set of postage stamps in honour of Late Ustad Sabri Khan. The new postage stamps will be released on December 13 commemorating the artiste.He was a legend who received numerous honors for his contribution to classical music of India. Ustad Sabri Khan was honoured with the Padma Shree Award (1992) and Padma Bhushan Award (2006) by the Government of India. He belonged to the Sainia Gharana which traces its roots back to Tansen, the fabled vocalist of Akbar's Darbar.
He had the honour of playing the instrument on the eve of India’s Independence in Parliament House.The Sarangi maestro had travelled extensively around the world including places like Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, Japan, USSR, Russia, US, Canada, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Mexico. He made the Sarangi popular among music lovers across the globe.
Born in Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh in 1927, the Ustad breathed his last on December 1, 2015, and was laid to rest in New Delhi. Fittingly, the stamp in his honour will be released in New Delhi.
